Fort Coenraadsburg (Fort São Tiago), Elmina
1 / 5About this experience
The small fort on St Jago hill, built by the Dutch around a Portuguese chapel to Saint James after they learned the hard way that whoever holds this hill holds Elmina Castle below. From the ramparts you look straight down on the castle, the lagoon and the fishing fleet — the best view of Elmina there is, and the clearest way to understand why the two were fought over for three centuries. Inscribed with the Ghanaian forts and castles on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. — Indicative price.
